What is argan oil?
Argan oil has been enjoying a surge in popularity recently, with The New York Times labeling it “liquid gold” and beauty and lifestyle bloggers raving about its numerous nutritional and skincare benefits.
And while you may be forgiven for thinking this wonder oil was just discovered recently, in Morocco, people have been aware of its nutritional, healing, and skin-loving powers for centuries!
Argan oil, which comes from the fruit of the argan tree, was first used by the North African Berber women. The women would take undigested argan pits from the feces of goats, grind the pits up and extract the precious oil (don’t worry…extraction methods have since changed!)
The oil they collected was used primarily for culinary purposes but was also used as a beauty aid and even as a topical treatment for burns and arthritis.
Argan oil today
The Berber people still use argan oil to this day, with the Berber women working together in coops to control the argan oil industry and produce the amber-colored oil.
The profits made from selling argan oil are shared among the local tribes and are used to provide better healthcare, education, and increased employment opportunities.
At Argania Butter, we’re directly involved in every aspect of production, which not only means we know we are supplying our customers with the ultimate in flavor and health benefits, but also so we can directly support and benefit over 500 Berber women and their children.
The amazing health benefits of eating argan oil
Don’t make the mistake of thinking argan oil is just a treat for your hair and skin! This miracle oil is packed with goodness, including essential fatty acids and antioxidants (including vitamin E, polyphenols, linoleic acid, and sterols), making it a common addition to luxury skincare products, but those same ingredients make a culinary necessity.
The only difference between the argan oil you put on your face and culinary argan oil is that the argan oil you eat is made with roasted kernels to bring out its glorious nutty flavor.
Here are just a few of the ways that argan oil can benefit the body:
However, these amazing health benefits are almost secondary to the light, silky, nutty flavor of our handcrafted argan oil. Enjoy with a chunk of fresh bread, in a salad dressing, drizzled with honey on your morning bowl of porridge, spooned onto grilled or steamed pasta or seafood…the list goes on!
It takes 15 hours, 30kg of fruit, and a whole lot of love to produce 1 liter of our special oil, but we think it’s more than worth it, as do our loyal customers that keep coming back for their bottle of liquid sunshine.
