The History and Culture of Morocco

Morocco has a rich history of challenges and victories that molded them into the country that they are now. These events have also resulted in a diverse culture that has piqued the interest of tourists around the world. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at Morocco's history and culture that makes the identity of the nation.

History

The origin of Morocco dates back to 788 AD. Subsequent years follow that, the country was ruled by multiple dynasties who won in battles as conquerors. In the 17 century, Morocco was able to avoid the occupation of the Ottoman Empire as the Saadi and Marinid dynasties ferociously resisted the foreign invaders. In the 19th century, the country was divided by France and Spain due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean. Fortunately, they regained their independence in 1956 and thrived to become the 5th largest economy of Africa. They then adopted the unitary constitutional monarchy as their form of government.

Culture of Morocco

Due to the colonization and multiple dynasties that ruled Morocco, it has resulted in a diverse collection of cultures. Let's take a closer look at this diversity in their culture in 2 different sections:

Cuisine

The Mediterranean, Berber, Andalusi, and Arabic influence in Moroccan cuisine are apparent. It is inherent in their choice of herbs such as mint, parsley, and cilantro and as well as spices such as saffron, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger. They also utilize produce that grows well in their land brought by some foreigners such as tomatoes, onion, garlic, zucchini, and eggplant. Another apparent influence from Europe is Morocco's high regard for tea or what they locally call' Atay.'

Language

As of today, Morocco's official languages are Tamazight and Standard Arabic. Most cities and provinces speak these languages, however, in places such as Casablanca and Tangier, people predominantly speak

French, English, and Spanish because these are the cities that were widely affected during the division mentioned above. Hence why it resulted in people being able to speak these languages. This has also

resulted in frequent code-switching of the citizens.

Morocco was able to make their turbulent history into an advantage showing the resilience of the nation and its citizens. Due to those years, they can acquire a rich history and diverse culture. Now, their tourism is growing faster and faster as their economy thrive together with it.
